PERSONAL STORY & EXCERPT FROM THE NUTRITION CHAPTER OF "IT'S ALL ABOUT THE DECA"
During the classic DECA run section of 262 miles, I was so sleep deprived, my feet were a disaster and literally every step felt like someone was smashing my mid foot with a hammer. The last 100 miles of the classic DECA run are absolute hell, no matter if you are winning the race or bringing up the rear.
As I was walking deliriously through the night at a pace of around 25 minutes a mile, my mind was racing to potential solutions to get out of this misery. What could wake me up and provide a short term kick in the ass to get my legs moving faster? At this point in the race, I had another athlete and much superior runner – Jozsef Rokob, closing on me. I finally decided to try something out of the box and developed the concoction, cokeffee and it worked. At the time, I was not even aware that Coke was experimenting with this mixture and finally sold it to the public. The drink has been discontinued.
What’s cokeffee? I mixed equal parts coffee and Coca Cola together in a 2 liter plaster bottle. I walked around the 1 mile loop drinking out of this 2 liter bottle and within 5 minutes or so started to feel better and jogging. Then the caffeine and sugar kicked in and it lasted for several hours. I continued to consume this drink mixture every lap along with food. The taste did not matter, it worked and I was able to hold off Jozsef.
There is no question, that this simple mixture, cokeffee allowed me to hold off an exceptional talented runner like Jozsef. Keep in mind that this strategy of high sugar and caffeine was used to get out of a bad spot and clearly is not a nutrition strategy to use for large portions of the race. However, the learning lesson was that during the DECA throw out your diet and fixation on all the new science of fat burning, ketosis, slow carb, etc. Do whatever you have to do to get to the finish line with your nutrition strategy.
